Clifford Odets--playwright, director, actor, and poet--was born in Philadelphia on July 18, 1906, the son of Russian and Romanian Jewish immigrants. When he was four, the family moved to the Bronx, where his father, Louis J. Odets, became a successful printer. In 1923, Odets dropped out of high school after two years and began to write poetry, short stories, and radio plays. He worked briefly in his father's printing and advertising company, but was determined to become an actor, despite his father's vehement disapproval.

During the first years of the twentieth century many of the most celebrated—and marketable— major leaguers supplemented their incomes by headlining in vaudeville or touring in legitimate plays during the off-season. A few even appeared in motion pictures: a new medium that was revolutionizing the way in which Americans passed their leisure hours. And so, given his status as one of the biggest names in baseball, Ty Cobb was able to earn hefty paychecks first by taking cues from a stage director rather than a field manager and then by trading in his glove and bat for a film script.

The Cheryl Crawford papers span the years 1920-1986 and include correspondence, office files, production files, scripts, financial records, scrapbooks, photographs, programs, clippings, ephemera and memorabilia. The strength of the collection is in the correspondence and production materials. Many of the scripts are annotated prompt books. Of special note are the materials for Porgy and Bess that includes a prompt book of the Broadway production and a file on West Side Story that Cheryl Crawford rejected as a project. Correspondence in the collection includes letters from such notables as Tennessee Williams, Thornton Wilder, Lillian Hellman, Elia Kazan, Mary Martin, Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward, Geraldine Page and Eli Wallach. Production materials include files on Porgy and Bess, Sweet Bird of Youth, Camino Real, Brigadoon, Oh Men!, Oh Women, Paint Your Wagon and The Rose Tattoo. There is also some small amount of materials on the Theatre Guild, Group Theatre, American Repertory Theatre and Actors' Studio, though this material is very sketchy.
7. Pingju (Ping Opera) Actresses in 1930s Shanghai from the Bottom Up
I examine a two-year (1935–1937) boom of China's northern folk theatre pingju in the southern city of Shanghai from the angle of celebrity studies.
In my article in this issue of Theatre Journal titled “Pingju (Ping Opera) and the Politics of Celebrity in 1930s Shanghai,” I examine a two-year (1935–1937) boom of China’s northern folk theatre pingju in the southern city of Shanghai from the angle of celebrity studies. As Shanghai was the country’s media center, I focus on how mediatization and the celebrification of the star actress Bai Yushuang (1907–1942), together with her closest rivel Zhu Baoxia (1914–1951), sustained the form’s two-year sensational run in the city, in sharp contrast to its status as low-class entertainment in the north. In this brief essay, I want to complement that article’s celebrity focus with a look of pingju from the bottom up by examining the experiences of the form’s less glamorous performers during the same period in Shanghai. Specifically, I focus on the cases of three actresses: an anonymous performer trying to make ends meet, a leading actress struggling to sustain her own troupe, and a star who won high praise but lacked enthusiastic tabloid and literati support necessary to elevate her to the world of the superstars.
